I have noticed over the past few months that this board has been terribly slow. Both at work with a T1 connection and a home with a cable modem, I sometimes have to refresh the page a few times before it loads up. Has anyone else had problems like this?

Same thing with me as well Tom. I have DSL at home and it is normally pretty quick for loading.

Had to restore the database from a Saturday backup - I "pruned" the old postings to remove extremely old posting no one has looked at in a year but accidently removed too much - my mistake. From what I can tell replies to this post was the only thing that went missing.

As far as the slowness of the site I have noticed it as well, though the connection on your end does not matter - it has to do with the database server speed. The slowness might be explained by the fact that the site is hosted on a "shared" server. That basically means that brockwaytrucks.org runs on a particular web-server - but along with Brockway are numerous other sites as well. They too get traffic, probably more so during the day, which makes the connection to that particular server run a little slower because of the increased traffic. Same thing with the database server that hosts this particular forum - a server hosting multiple databases all being hit probably at the same time depending on the time of day. The upside to "shared" hosting is cheaper cost but the drawback is slower performance.

I also talked to tech support today and they are upgrading there SQL databases to a newer version (from MySQL 4 to MySQL 5 for the techies) which means they are upgrading hardward/software and might have some slowness while they roll out their upgrades. Plus, not sure if it has anything to do with it, but this version of the message board software is a BETA which means that might be a few bugs to work out and some streamlining left to be done.

I think the main problem Carl was having, and had a question on, was his staying logged on - the message board does not retain his login info as he jumps from page to page... he has to keep logging in. I don't have the problem and suggested he open it up to see if anyone else has the same trouble? I know he connects thru AOL so not sure if that is a shared problem or not? Any else?

I think we should wait and see how the upgrade to the data base goes first. But it took me almost an hour to post my message this morning. It also took me at least a half an hour just to post this comment. If we still experience problems after the upgrade, is it possible to look into another server? If it cost additional money, we could come up with some other ideas then. I think the 'slow' board problem may cause some people to lose interest.

For anyone using AOL I would recommend NOT using the AOL Broweser to access this page, use the default Internet Explorer.

I do not use AOL. The earlier problems that I had seem to be better. Things at times are still a little slow, but other times they are better than the old. In general, it is a big improvement here. Glen

Be sure to read How to Post Photos and read the instructions carefully for using PhotoBucket. You can also use the "Upload Attachment" feature which is now available.

I am sorry that I was not clear before. THIS site tells me REQUESTED URL COULD NOT BE RETRIEVED now. PhotoBucked did that before. THAT was the biggest reason I was encouraged with an upgrade. I can not post pictures by this site or a host. Perhaps It is a new problem on my part. Glen

It appears that we are still experiencing problems with the board being s l o w. A few guys that post occasionally have emailed me to say they are having issues with logging in, etc.

I realize it's hard to solve a problem if you don't now exactly what the problem is, but is there anything else we can do???

Sunday was terrible - I could not use the message board either. I put a call into tech support with our problems and here was the response:

Thank you for contacting us.

We were unable to duplicate the issue. We have checked the site in different machines it is working fine. The home page is a post type so it has to retrieve the contents from database, in such case, sometimes it take time to load a page. Now Web site is loading fine. Please check this from your end.

If you have any further questions, please don't hesitate to contact us. We are available 24/7.
Sincerely,
Aleta Meyer

I wrote back saying that response was unacceptable and that something needs to be looked at. I suggest everyone having a problem write in as well to tech support - maybe if they get a few complaints they will look into a little further.

Admin: I am having trouble backing up. When i have finished with one thread and hit my back button to go back to the index I am getting a "webpage expired" notice and have to go thru refresh and try again to get to the index. Like the new format but I think this problem may be in the web hosting part not the format part?
Thanks much for all your efforts

I received another response from our web hosting company in regards to the slowness:

We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused you. You may experience intermittent slowness while accessing the site, if the load on the server is high. We are aware of this issue. Currently, we'll be moving people off of overloaded servers, to the new servers. Our engineers are working to avoid this intermittent slowness. We are doing our best to rectify the situation as quickly as possible. We have now plans to add more hardware to our MySQL farm, to improve speed even.

If you have any further issues, please either reply to this email or call us at 888-278-9780, anytime of the day for assistance.

We apologize for any inconvience, as we do appreciate your business.

Brocky,
I would do one of two things
  • Don't use the Back button (the forum is highly database driven so the error message does not surprise me) - instead use the navigational links to go back to the previous topic page
  • If you are using a recent web browser (such as IE7, Firefox, or Safari 2) then use the "tabs" feature. If you have one of these web browsers, Right-Click on a link you want to view and choose the option to "open link in new tab". The new page will open in a new "tabbed window" leaving your previous page where it is - that way you simply close the new page and the previous page is still there.
