Brockway 154TS

Postby steve s. » Sun Feb 09, 2020 9:51 pm

I thought it was time to have a post here to start 2020. An old friend sent me some pictures recently of a Brockway dump truck that has been sitting outdoors for many years in my hometown. I have known about this truck since the 1960's, but had thought it was long gone. As it turns out, this truck is one serial number away from a 154TS crane truck that I own. They were sold as part of a six truck order to Serco Equipment Co., a relative of Fowler and Williams Trucking. Both were tractors in their first lives.

The 154TS was a short lived model. Based on the ever popular 154 model, the TS had a set back front axle (7 inches)- the S in the model number- and twin updraft carburetors- the T in the model designation. The 154TS was built only in 1953 and 1954. It is interesting to note that the first Brockway cab with steel A pillars and a gasketed windshield was a 154TS. The new 155w came out in 1955 sporting a two barrel downdraft carburetor, which was much more efficient and dependable than the twin carbs on the TS, which was discontinued.

I asked my friend for a picture of the engine , hoping to find a set of twin carbs. He sent me another pictures, and it appears that the original flathead B6427 engine has been replaced with a Continental overhead valve 427.

Hope you can add it to your collection. Any chance of a picture of twin updraft carbs anywhere?

In one of my first conversations with Craig Morgan years ago, he mentioned seeing a Brockway with dual updraft carbs and how cool it was. A few years ago at Macungie I was able to purchase a 154TS Instruction Manual and it tells you how to set up and sync the dual updraft carbs. It also mentions how important timing was to that setup. I'm guessing they must have been a bear to keep adjusted properly.

I have (2) Ellis dual carb (downdraft) manifolds for the B427 motor. I have not been able to locate the correct exhaust manifold to use with it. One of them I bought was NOS in the box with the assembly instructions...
