Colonial Board Co. 358

Postby Pokey493 » Fri Oct 12, 2018 2:48 pm

Colonial Board Co. was a division of Lydall & Foulds located in Manchester, Ct. This 358 is one of the last Brockway’s they purchased before they started to lease White’s from United Motor Leasing of Hartford, Ct. The 358 was in a wreck on I-91 in Enfield, Ct. in which the truck rolled on its side. After getting it back on its wheels I was told the only visible damage was the right side mirror along with some scratched paint.

The absence of the stack may have been because of the low clearance where the trucks were parked at night. I do remember the very tight quarters in that garage, there was very little room when all the tractors were shoehorned in. The tandem axle 400 series cabovers were kept in a larger garage. No soot on the trailer makes me wonder if the cabovers were minus stacks also.

If I remember correctly, when the 300 series was introduced in 1965, the vertical exhaust was an option, with under-body exhaust as standard equipment. Some freight companies like Penn Yan Express purchased only under-body exhaust systems on their Brockways to keep their van trailers clean. Even PYE's 700 series were weed burners.

Norton & Foulds or NORFOULDS, was the predecessor to Lydall & Foulds. This picture was shared with me by the former mechanic, who’s brother in-law used to drive this truck.
