Well in doing my part to keep this forum alive, I thought I would share this springs project.
The age old issue with a leaky steering box.

Over the course of the winter , I had started ole Stix Mixer just to excercise her lungs and to fill the garage with diesel fumes.

After running it for a while , letting things get up to temp I moved back and forth to make sure brakes weren't stuck to the drums , then shut it down.
Nothing unusual, until the next morning I was heading out with my personal truck and saw a lot of oil all under the left front axle . Well sure enough it was just running out of the output shaft on the steering box.
I had resealed this once before, about 5 years ago, and I did the best I could to clean up the area on the output shaft that rides on the seal.
Guess I didn't do good enough.

All that to get to this:
I remember another member had put a post on here about removing the box and packing it up and shipping it to RH Sheppard.

I called their reman center and they were very helpful.
Mind you not a lot of hard parts are left for the old 92 series boxes,
But they did reseal it and did have a new shaft to install .

I sent it out, and had it back in a week .
I have just about got it all back together.

After getting this little bugger out, I forgot that the last time I did this I has a NH 230 Cummins.
Since then I have replaced the power plant with NTC 290.
This engine sits full upright, not leaning over like the 230,
So I had about a 1/8 inch clearance from the steering box to the front timing cover in the engine.

I needed to loosen all the motor mounts and jack the engine over to the right , even then I had to do a little extra surgery on the frame rails to get it out .

Following the prescribed repair , as you can see I cut the frame rail and welded the piece back in.

Stretch, have you ever tried the flame spray stuff on worn shafts? We did a sander that had been cut down by dust and I will use it again on another project. How are the horses?

Never tried flame spray.
The ponies... Are still over fed... Under worked..
, but doing fine. Just gettin older and greyer.. Like most of us!!

Stretch - your frame cut is the approved Brockway method for removing the box with the engine installed. I've done a lot of them! Unfortunately, the steering box is one of the first components installed in the frame when the truck was on the assembly line. Some engines offer enough clearance like a 671 or an NH250, but most engines are too close. Even with engines that have clearance, it is far easier to cut the frame and lift the box straight up. Attempting to fish the output shaft out of the frame is a real finger pincher!!

Yeah unfortunately I am getting good at this...or just bad at the repair, like I said this is the second time I have done this. :roll:

I am also, installing new lines as well, filters oil etc....might as well go all out.
I also need to change the ball joint on the drag link arm.

Make sure you are using the proper oil. The system was designed to use 20W non-detergent motor oil. Using anything else may cause leaking and/or foaming. You mentioned a filter change. That's a good idea annually. Fram still makes the cartridge filter for the oil reservoir.
