Here is a pic of a Brockway I found during a Google search last month. The title of the pic was 762 Brockway w/Detroit... Anyway it's cool picture with only a few axles on the ground...

6-71 Detroits have the smaller air cleaner and four inch exhaust. 12V71's have two small air cleaners and two four inch exhausts. At least that is the case with my 12V71's.

Since it does appear to be one of those legendary Michigan road trains, could they have meant "in Detroit?" Perhaps it has one of the big Cat's in it.

Definitely a single 5" stack so it's a big Cat, NT Cummins, VT903 Cummins, or turbocharged 8V Detroit. Late production 761 or 762 could have a 8V92T which would be high horsepower. My bet is NTC-350 or NTA-400 Cummins as they were much more popular in the mid '70s. I remember at least one 761 with a 400 Cummins in it, working in our service territory.

Stan, its not a 761 but a 762! And paulcgpr that is a good point.

6-71T would have 5" exhaust, but darn sure wouldn't be pulling a Michigan train .

Agreed. Some 6-71T's were 4" exhaust, although most were 5".

Copied the description off Hanks, I also assumed it was an H: I never noticed the skinny but tall wet tank until it was blown up:

The only Brockway prettier than a 761 was the long hood 762 seen here coupled to a set of aggregate short doubles in Detroit, Michigan in the late 1970s. What a stunning outfit! Martin Phippard Collection.

Glen,
The reason for the 762 is the length of the engine. The 12V71 Detroit could not protrude into driver's compartment due to width. The first 3406 Cat installed was put into a tractor that was originally built with a 12V71.
The 762's hood is 64.5 inches long compared to 57 inches for the 761. The distance from the front of the fender where the headlight is, is 27 inches verses 22 inches for a 761. The axle and steering box were not moved forward, just the front end of the frame.

Basically, it's the 700 series equivalent to a H360/U360. Which does make me ask a good question: Why with the long hood 360s did Brockway just use the engine prefix to denote that these were different trucks from other 360s, but with the long hood 762, they used a completely different model number to tell them apart from the rest? Which truck is the 762 based on, the 760 or 761?

The first 1693, not 3406. That was a U but as you said got changed into the first H360
