Got this from a 1954 Frink brochure. A young Stan can be seen in the background watching the plow go by his house.

Joe, it looks like that tire doesn't have chains, either. That would be pretty impressive. Steve

Yes it is Steve but its a Brockway. Up until about 15 years ago in Dickson City,Penna. there were a few Brockway's of that era working a doghole. Joe D.

Q.B. I just have to ask ,what is a Doghole? I am assuming it has to do with a coal mine being near Dickson City.

I love it! I know you would have to dress warm because of the poor heat and having the window down so you didn't inhale the inherent exhaust and oil leaks!A cold Stegmaier tasted good after your shift or even some Christian Brothers in some black coffee in your thermos. If you have anymore please post them or let me know where I can see some.

Nick

bigdogz You are right about it being about coal mining. a doghole is a small coal mine that was not very deep. It was usually mined by a few family or friends. There were no safety standards as most if not all were unauthorized. If you want to go in a real Anthracite Deep Mine go to Mcdade Park in scranton. They take you down the mine in a mine car and it was a working mine up until the 1960'S. It is an experience you will not forget. I do not know if open in Winter. Both sides of my Parents came from Eastern Europe and worked in the mines as my Father did after WW2 he did not like it. My Wife's Father also worked in the mines. There are no more deep mines in my area but in Schulkyll County there are still some. Joe D.

Frink's factory was located in Clayton NY. We used to spend a week in the summer fishing in Clayton and we drove by there a few times. Last time we drove by the building was vacant...

Q.B. I knew that was some sort of coal country lingo. I've always wanted to the anthicite museum down by Scranton. We actually were going to Shomokin to look up some of my wifes family history , but snow storm changed our plans. Is'nt that the county you mentioned?

Hey Bigdogz - why don't we plan a little Brockway roadtrip in the spring. Get a bunch of us together on a Saturday, meet somewhere and run the Brockways down to the coal mine museum for a tour? Anyone interested? Stan

bigdogz Shamokin is in Northumberland County it is on the West side of Schulykill County. It had a lot of mines in its day also. I think Shamokin has the largest culm dump in U.S. We were lucky the last 25 years or so. When the U.S. Govt. had money for mine flushing and removing culm dumps, brownfields Lackawanna and Luzerne County were about the first to recieve money to clean up mine scarred areas. Then Govt. about ran out of money to complete it in other counties on same scale. Stan not only Anthracite Museum but Steamtown also if you like trains. Joe D.

Doing both the Coal mine and Sreamtown is easy to do in one day. They are only about 5 miles apart. Joe D.

Coal, Steam ,and Brockways all very proud has bens in American history. Brian if we had hi sided dump trailers we could bring coal back to NYSEG Jenison plant then reload with cinders for the local towns and be home early, should have left at 3. That too is just a memory. I would welcome any PA trip!

bigdogz you mentioned cinders. They use them to make cinder block. Remember the red as dumps. It is shipped to a lot of States now for decorative purposes. It is also used to make miracle grow. Like most of the Northeast States Brockways were a popular truck. My Father was one of the first to use them hauling cars in early 1970'S which was unusual as most car haulers were Ford,GMC or IH..
