Rear Felt Wheel Seals

Postby oldspwr » Mon Jun 18, 2007 6:09 am

I am replacing the felt wheel seals on the rear axle. This is the inner hub seal and it's sandwiched between two metal washers (rings...). Does anyone know if I'm supposed to soak the new ones in oil before I install them? Or do they go in dry?

I couldn't get an oil seal for that application so I'm going to use Amsoil synthetic grease instead.

Thanks,

Tom

Tom, the felt should be soaked with 90 weight then all the excess squeezed out. This will preserve the felt from water damaged and also keep the felt from being worn away with excessive temperature running dry. Stan 8)
