Shepherd power sterring box swap

I am in the process of swapping a shepherd 592 from a n361 with 250 cummins into a u360 with same box but the casting got cracked around where seal goes on pittman arm shaft on the v12
.It looks to be an SOB to get box out of v12 truck but doable. I just assumed n361 would be easier but this has upright engine(not slanted and it looks like it might hit before clearing. I was just curious if anyone has removed one from cummins powered and knows for sure. I can cut frame if need be as it is a parts truck. Just thought I would pull it out without if possible....Brian

Brian - I've done many removal and installs of the Sheppard boxes on every type of Brockway. Here's the deal - loosen all the box to frame mounting bolts and let the box move toward the engine as far as possible. Remove the reinforcing plate from the outside of the frame rail. Now take a sawzall and make 2 cuts in the frame rail carefully to allow the output shaft of the box to be lifted straight up. You will be removing about a three inch piece of the rail top flange and continue to cut down the vertical face of the frame to the large hole where the shaft passes thru the frame. When you are done and the box is out the opening in the frame will look like a U.
For reassembly, you install the box and bolt it into the U with the bolts you removed. Now bolt the piece back in that you cut out and after everything is bolted true and straight, weld the two saw cuts and grind smooth. Last step is to remove the bolts and install the outside of frame reinforcement plate. This is the approved factory procedure I learned while working at Elmira Branch. I did the same thing on Stix Mixer.
Not to bad of a job.
Just beware.... That steering box is heavier than it looks.
I put my engine hoist on it to lift out unit I could
get a better grip... Even then it is a heavy piece.

Thanks guys. My case is not the norm as far as the cummins powered truck. The radiator and cab are off of it. So I got looking today and my easiest move was to just unbolt the four bolts holding motor in and go at that way. I will keep you updated on the v12 scenario...I am going to use engine hoist as well stretch...Brian

I ended up picking up engine with excavator and sliding front over about 4 inches. This allowed for box to fall on 2x8 i placed on angle from front cross member to spring. I then pulled it out with forks on skidsteer. V12 is next, i think i can take enough stuff off and not have to cut frame on it i'm hopeful.

Luckily the box on the 360 came out much easier. I even resized a pic. Seal kit off ebay should be here tomorrow.
