The same but not the same

Postby 1974361ll » Fri Jul 10, 2015 6:57 am

I got some new spring hangers for the 361 that have the same casting number as the ones from my truck but they appear to be machined differently the biggest difference is the thickness and also some of the holes are drilled in different locations. Hopefully someone here can explain whats going on.

Casting numbers are just that, the number of the casting only. They may be machined differently and each configuration is it's own part number for a separate application. It is common to see the thinner machined casting have shims behind it (between casting and frame) to position it in line with the leaf spring. If you are too "thick" already you will need to have your new piece machined or find a "thin" one. The difference in thickness is to accommodate single or double or triple rail frames. Ultimately, the end of the leaf spring and shackle must be centered on the pin and not bound against the casting. As for the threaded holes where the battery box or other accessories mount, if they are blind, you can always drill and tap them. Just use your respective bracket as a centering guide for the threaded hole. The hanger castings you have, left and right, where used on many models in the 300, 400, 500 and 700 series of Brockway trucks. Some hold the cab mounts, others are used with the battery box, some even have the rear fender brace there. Hope this helps to clear up the mystery.
