Detroit Diesel 12 cylinder balancer question

OK nobody needs to say that I need to pressure wash this now that the radiator is out. Pulley and balancer have been removed . What is the next step to remove the rest of the balancer hub off the crank? Is that some sort of tapered cone in there like on a Rockwell axle ? The center large bolt was loose and balancer appeared to be moving when running. Plan is to remove and reset. Frank

Yep-----Tapered cones and spacers. No easy solution that I've heard of to get the outer cone off .

Frank - hardwood block and heavy hammer, hit on flange driving towards engine similar to removing a drive axle with tapers on the studs. Also use a small taper chisel in the split to "open" the wedge. Once things start to loosen, use a puller to pull on flange. Clean crankshaft first so wedge will slide easily. Good luck. Poor design and a bitch job. At least the radiator is out!

Glad you didn't sell the U12V71TL. Get her running and bring her to the show. Two years from now everyone working on restoring a 12V71 should have them ready for the 2015 show where we can have a gathering of the 'Big' Detroit Diesels.

Hello Dave yes I was up there twice last week. I thought I saw you go by I tried calling you on the radio but you may have been too far away. I guess the outfit ( Rudy ) has bee bring the sugar up from Domino in Baltimore for some reason. You never know with these big companies what they are thinking. When I was with L.J. Kennedy hauling USG Sheetrock out of Stony Point NY I did a Home Depot in Glen Burnie MD that was 4 miles from the USG Baltimore plant. There was a period of time they had us running customers in MD. and Va. and Johnson the Baltimore carrier was servicing the NY Metro area with the same product . Went on for weeks we all burned a ton of fuel and a bunch of toll money. Hopefully see you up one day for coffee Frank
