I am thinking about putting power steering on my 1968 N360 tractor. Anybody have any advice on the best way? Thanks, Jeff

Hi Jeff! Putting power steering in your truck would be the best thing you ever did.
But it is definitely a big job to do it especially if you want to put a shepherd power steering box in and that's what I did to my 358 which had a Cummins NH230 in it.
After all is said and done it cost me about $1500 and it was the best thing I ever did.
Look back at my post Anthony Masone sr and you'll see my work.
Also its under Tony's Brockway 358 Resto.
 Good luck Tony

The 360 model Brockway is a little more difficult to convert to power steering as the steering box is on the outside, (rather than inside along the bottom of the radiator) of the frame on the left front. Many that have done this conversion have used a TRW box similar to what is used on a Ford Louisville or a modern Freightliner. The Sheppard box which is standard to most Brockways is too large and interferes with the left front tire in a right turn. The conversion also requires possibly changing the left spindle to obtain the correct rearward facing arm on top. Manual steering utilizes a forward facing spindle arm. Don't be discouraged, the conversion can be done, it's just not an easy bolt up job unless you are lucky enough to find a donor 360 with power steering.

No, my box is on the inside of the frame rail.

Stan, why wouldn't something like a 358 or 359 work? And I know they mounted these on the inside, why do you supose they mounted the 360's on the outside? Just curious.

Radiator capacity is the big reason. With the large radiator that I have in my V360, there is no room for a box inside the frame rails. If the box is inside the rail it must be a very small manual box. How about posting some pictures. I can't remember ever seeing a 360 with a box inside the rails.

Well the good news is that the spindle arm faces the right direction for power steering to be added. Bad news is that with the Cummins engine and the radiator so close there is no room for a power steering box inside the frame. Try to find a TRW HB64 box off a Ford or something similar and then mount it outside the frame. You may get lucky enough to even reuse the drag link. Make sure you get the pitman arm with the box.

Hi Stan I am just curious about what you said. And I know my truck is a 358 and Jeff’s truck is 360. It appears to have the same steering box that I had in my 358.
The only difference I see is the angle of the steering linkage.
And he probably has a bigger cubic inch motor than I have but I wouldn't know the difference in size of motor. The Sheppard steering box does fit like a glove with no room to spare. After he cuts out the top of the frame the steering box will come closer to outside of frame by 2 inches. He could have a larger radiator.
Don't want to send him in the wrong direction.
PS Jeff if you want me to take some measurements.
Frame to engine and frame to radiator I will do that for you.
Keep in mind the steering box is only one part of the project. There is the oil reservoir hoses drag link and the pump to get it to work.
It is a big job but it's worth it. Tony

Tony - discussion is what this is all about! I think you will find that your truck has additional clearance for the steering box because your Cummins lays over on a 15 degree(?) angle. His engine is straight up and the accessory drive casting is in the way. It would be interesting to see what the measurements are at the bottom radiator to frame on both trucks.

Thank you Stan & Tony for your help. The truck came with a 230 that was tilted and I replaced it with a 290 that I stood up straight. The two engines are the same size. Tony, saw your video and pictures of your work, I thought that unit looked way too big to fit in my space, but maybe not.
At any rate, I am loath to cut my frame; this is a working truck that has to earn it's keep. Thanks again, I'll be looking at other trucks and picking others brains, and my shoulder is feeling some better today. Anyway, I know more than I did. Jeff

Here is the pic of our 361 without the box installed... This will give you an idea how much room you have with the stock radiator.

I think you will find the the Shepard box would fit if his Cummins engine wasn't in the way.

John Potter put a powersteering box on his 360. It is externally mounted and has a very very short drag link ( the two joints are almost touching. Could you mount the box to the rear behind the tire? (like some Petes)

As I look at the pics for Jeff and Tony's truck, they both have the smaller radiator. My 360 has the 1125 sq in. rad and it comes out to the inside edge of each frame rail. If you look at the pics you can see the tin spacer plate that is bolted inside the rad shell (1 side to the shell and 1 side to the rad.) With the 1125 rad you wouldn't be able to bolt the box in. I have seen the installations where the bottom lefthand corner of the rad is cut out and another tank section bolted on to allow for the inside box. Just some thoughts..... Scott

My V360 also has the big full width radiator. I think a lot did.
