Hi Hoagy...

Welcome to the message board! Here is the breakdown of your serial number...

148W-53-51374

148W is the model number of the truck. You can go to this link for more info...

Nobody is really certain on what the 53 is.

51374 is the serial number which means is was made in 1954 (approx 50400-52000)

I also have a '54 148W and my serial # is 51472.
