McCord 761 with 3408 cat

A gentleman who new alot about this truck has been posting stuff on BMT which i thought you guys would enjoy.

Here is a 1976 one owner Brockway that just sold June 12 for $38,000 in Nashville. Powered by 3408 Cat. It belonged to McCord's Heavy and Specialized Haulers based in Nashville. They are in the process of shutting down all services after 70 years in business. This truck was driven exclusively by William "Shorty" Crawford. Shorty, as a 12 year old black boy mesmerized by big trucks, started sweeping the floors of the shops for Buford McCord, the founder. Shorty rose to the position of "Most Respected" within the company and within the company's huge clientele base. Now in his 70's, Shorty is still there helping with the task of cleaning up and cleaning out.! Shorty has been and still is the "go to" guy if you need to know anything "heavy haul"..!!

He just mentioned on BMT that piece weighs 300,000 Pounds!!!!!!

The Tackaberry's bought that truck. It is a U762TL as it originally had a Detroit 12V71. They replaced the Detroit with a Caterpillar 3408. I believe the transmissions were a 6 x 4 set up.
May be ready for our show in August.

When I spoke to the guy from Richie Bros. he had the info on paper from the driver maybe? he tod me it had a 8-V 92 Detroit from the factory and as far as I know it was a 761, thats what I was bidding on and he did send me the door tag on an email nice truck !

Why would they change the serial number. What does the grill she'll say 761 or 762 Doesn't make sense. Why would u ever replace a v12 with a cat

I kinda think the owner was a big Detroit fan at one time cause I also bid on a 1967 Pete 352 with a factory V-12 that he had! I pulled out at 24,000 and the truck sold for 25,000! But we all know what that first batch of those 00-92 Detroits did, but they did not come out with the Silver series fast enough for some guys I guess! I have run the 6V-350 Silvers and one 475 V8-92 and would not be afraid to run one today, but just like the Mack E-9 V8 you love em or you hate em! Me I love em both and still run Detroit's in my truck's today

Now, the M761LL info was posted by me over on the BMT board. I visited with Shorty (William Crawford) today on the phone. He said that the 8v92 blew, spun a bearing probably, while coming down Monteagle Mt. here in TN. The motor was repaired under warranty due to water pump issues (leaking in the motor) with the early 8v92s. Soon afterwards the 8v92 in their Autocar went south.! Buford McCord had seen enough. He ordered a crate Cat 3408 for the Autocar. Before the Cat arrived, Shorty, being the top driver for the company also wanted to have the "top dog" truck and used his cunning skills to talk the boss into putting the Cat in his truck, the Brockway.!! Shorty performed the swap himself. Besides being one of the best heavy haul drivers ever, Shorty is an ace weldor and mechanic. I owned a crane service for 40 years here in Mid TN and used McCord many times over the years to haul the big stuff we could not handle. Got to know and respect Shorty during this time. I'll post more tales about Shorty and the Brockway when I can.

Here's da man..! William "Shorty" Crawford. The nickname must have stuck from bein' a 12 yr old workin' around the McCord shops, because he ain't short..! I had to get some parts in Nashville, stopped and visited with Shorty for a little while. I mentioned the show in Cortland he snapped "I been there.!". Me: "Really?" Him: "Yeah, I flew in to NY, got a cab to Cortland an' drove it (the 761) home from the factory when they got it built, didn' want nobody else in it.!". I took this pic of him standing by what's left of the Autocar that was supposed to get the Cat 3408. It wound up gettin' the 92 out of the Brockway. Shorty said the 3408 has never been cracked open. Also is a pic of one of the "Jimmys" that was assigned to all the "normal" hauling. Also worth noting, the 761 was yellow with black fenders from the factory.

Sled dog, if he woulda bought that model Brockway I guarantee there would not be a 3408 Cat in that one! It's just to bad the dealer did not sell him the 71 series V- 12
