This past week I had my '86 442 lined up at a friends garage in West Wyoming, about 45 minutes from the house. So on Friday after work I went down to pick it up, and on the way home I came through Jenkins Township. Out of the corner of my eye I spotted a 361 so I turned around and went back a took a few pics. I only took a quick look at the truck since no one was around to ask permission (it was at a service garage...)

Jeff, back in the day they called that breather a "bird catcher"... was supposed to increase fuel efficency at hiway speed, they were popular on R model Macks. Not sure how many birds they caught! Pokey

I'm guessing that means they were used on non-turbo engines, because I always thought the whole purpose for putting a turbo on was the same reason, better fuel efficiency and more power.

Fleet operators and I'm sure owner operators were always looking to improve fuel mileage, one of their biggest expenses, any way they could. Radial tires, wind fairings, governed engines, more aluminum and fiberglass parts were just some of the ways that were used. And yes, the use of turbos. Pokey

That was Donaldson's large truck version of "ram air" ,kind of a take off of Chrysler's tuned intake runners . If you had a dial restriction guage in the cab,you could see running down the highway that restriction would drop and ,of course, efficiency increase . It would also help get more usable life out of the air cleaner if servicing by restriction, not by mileage or time or a scheduled PM interval . Donaldson had short versions for conventionals ,so as not to block the view .
